Wolverine-centered Science Lessons

A final update from 2025: We have five new wolverine-centered science lessons available online! Thanks to a grant from the Keta Legacy Foundation and the support of the Methow Valley School District, CWP Project Coordinator Cal Waichler and educator Katharine Bill developed wolverine-centered curriculum for 2nd grade and high school.

Interested educators can access these five lessons, including presentations, videos, worksheets and detailed lessons plans on the curriculum page of our website.

Our three 2nd Grade science lessons (Wolverines and the Mountain Ecosystem, Diving into Wolverine Data and Tracking Wildlife) introduce students to the wild, wintry world of the North Cascades and the wildlife that are uniquely adapted to live there. Building off a presentation of exciting wildlife photography and clips of researchers studying wolverines, students engage with the methods that researchers use to study rare wolverines and align with NGSS standards in the process.

Our two high school lessons (Wolverine Biology and Monitoring, Wildlife Field Skills), place wildlife research techniques in the hands of students. Building from a short film and a presentation about research techniques, students engage in skills useful in many outdoor careers such as route planning, wildlife tracking and monitoring data analysis. Finally, students analyze the biodiversity and biogeography of the Cascades and explore what it would be like to be a field scientist.

Second graders overflowing with curiosity about “Yukon”, a very old wolverine pelt gifted to CWP

We would love to learn how these lessons went in your classroom! Let us know at info at cascadeswolverineproject.org.
