Monitoring Update and “Fall” Fundraising

Winter has already arrived in the North Cascades, with two feet of snow at Washington Pass, and more on the way!  Thanks to our community, we are prepared, better than ever, for winter monitoring with two brand new snowmobiles and a trailer.  Supporters donated a total of over $28,000 to make this happen.  We are exceedingly grateful to Kevin and Cassandre McGowan for extending $20,000 and acting as matching donors in this campaign.

Huge thanks is also due to Anna Machowicz, who not only works with us testing and researching our community science methods, but acts as our revered Snowmobile Queen, handling our machine and trailer needs, in partnership with Home Range Wildlife Research.  Our new snowmobiles will be available as back-ups for her essential research of lynx, which happens to be another one of our favorite wildlife species.

Keep an eye out for a glimpse of the elusive lynx, as well as wolverine, in this five minute video highlighting our first five years of wildlife monitoring, produced by our multi-talented Project Coordinator, Cal Waichler:

Cal also had the pleasure of collaborating with the beloved Winthrop Rink this fall, to freeze wolverine tracks throughout the ice, in honor of both the Methow Valley kid’s hockey team and the fur-and-bone version of Gulo gulo.  The tracks give the rink a bit of wildness, and act as a reminder of the extraordinary tenacity, agility, and strength of all wolverines.

If you missed the chance to contribute to the capital campaign, never fear, our Fall Fundraiser kicks off now! Though it could be called a Winter Fundraiser, given the cold stormy conditions…

Help us reach our Fundraising Goal of $15,000
